Senior Ministry: A Look at the Growing Number of Senior Citizens and How to Effectively Minister to Them

Abstract

The “Baby Boomer” generation is getting older. By the year 2030 they are estimated to number over seven million people! The question we need to ask ourselves as a church body is, “Are we ready?” Senior ministry is going to be on the rise and a large part of the pastor’s ministry in the coming years. The purpose of this thesis is to raise awareness of this changing demographic in America and give information on how to minister to seniors. By gathering information about the upcoming demographic I will show the urgency needed in senior ministry. This urgency is motivated by a desire to share the life-saving Word of God with seniors. I will also give some information on inreach and outreach programs a church can use and adapt to their own congregations. The hope is that by raising awareness and giving aid to congregations, many more seniors may hear the Gospel, continue to feel included in their congregations, and be comforted with Christ’s love until he calls them home.
