Martin Luther: Personal and Family Life
Abstract
Much work has been devoted to Martin Luther as the Reformer, but many have neglected his personal life. The most well-known of matters relates to his marriage to Katherine. Though the marriage began to accomplish practical matters to follow his own preaching regarding marriage, genuine affection between the spouses blossomed. Luther greatly cherished God’s gift of a companion and children. Other gifts that Luther received were money, contrary to popular belief that he was poor. However, he often refused the splendor of earthly wealth and sought to give away his riches to those in need, understanding that his possessions come from God. Instead, he sought a simple life. He enjoyed tending his garden, beekeeping, woodworking, playing chess, bird-watching, and caring for his dog Toelpel. Most of all, he centered his life around Scripture as he can be seen praying and leading his family in devotions throughout various parts of the day.
