The Life and Legacy of Rev. John O. Lang
Abstract
This paper examines the life and ministry of Rev. John O. Lang (1949–1974), highlighting how his commitment to the inerrant Word of God and the Lutheran Confessions shaped his pastoral practice and leadership at St. Paul’s, Columbus. Drawing on archival sources—including sermons, letters, and educational materials—it traces Lang’s theological reaction toward liberalizing trends in mid-20th-century American Lutheranism. The study demonstrates how Lang’s confessional faithfulness guided his pastoral decisions, offering an example for contemporary WELS pastors and congregations that doctrinal integrity can coexist with effective pastoral care and leadership. Serving as both a historical account and a confessional case study, this work underscores the ongoing relevance of confessional commitment in guiding congregational life.
